ANODIC COATING DEFECTS

Their Causes and Cure

by Arthur William Brace

This publication attempts to identify, not only defects arising from the processes involved in producing an anodic finish, but also those that may have originated in the material. Such defects occur infrequently, thanks to the considerable effort devoted by the aluminium industry to improving quality and to researching the phenomena which occur at the metal-anodic oxide interface.

The volume attempts to bring together all sources of defects, whatever their origin. The author goes beyond a simple identification of the defect by providing suggestions on avoiding or correcting these defects.

Contents

The Identification of Defects - Defects Produced in Pretreatment - Defects Arising from Deficiencies in Cleaning - Defects arising in the Brightening Process - Defects arising in the Etching Process - Defects in the Anodic Coating - Defects in Dyeing and Colouring - Defects in Sealing or on the Surface Defects arising from Castings - Defects arising due to Corrosion - Defects arising from Extrusion - Defect arising from Fabricating Operations - Defects arising from Sheet Manufacture

THE TECHNOLOGY OF ANODIZING ALUMINIUM

by Arthur William Brace

Since the publication of the first edition in 1968 this book has been regarded as the most authoritative text available on anodizing technology.

This popular and valuable book has been completely re-edited by Prof. Brace and considers the significant new developments in anodizing technology. This edition has been an attempt to set out much of the detailed experience gained in more than 40 years involvement in aluminium finishing. This information is such that most of it is not to be found in published research papers and the trade literature but arises from personal experience of investigating problems under production conditions.

Chapters have been added reflecting the commercial importance of the new techniques. This volume will satisfy the anodizer who requires the more detailed technology presenting it in a setting wider than its own tools and methods. After an introduction to anodizing, the reader is presented with the practical application of the new technology and describes the nature of the industry with principles of capital investment appraisal and the basis of budgeting and cost control. Among the chapters completely rewritten are those on colouring, sealing, and cleaning and etching, while the balance of the text has been revised and updated. This new edition is an excellent summary of the anodizing technologies explained in clear language encompassing the advice of experienced technicians.

Contents

The Nature of the Anodic Coating - The Effect of the Material being Anodized - Jigs, Racks and Fixtures for Use in Anodizing - Principles and Practice of Cleaning Aluminium - The Principle and Practice of Etching Aluminium- Mechanical Finishing of Aluminium before Anodizing - Chemical Polishing - Electrolytic Brightening and Polishing - Sulphuric Acid Anodizing plant - Sulphuric Acid Anodizing Technology - Anodizing in Other Electrolytes - Hard Anodizing - Adsorption Dyeing of Anodic Coatings - Multi-Colouring and Printing Techniques - Electrolytic Colouring of Anodic Coatings - Methods of Sealing Anodic Coatings - Methods of Testing Anodic Coatings.

LATEST ADVANCES IN EXTRUSION TECHNOLOGY AND SIMULATION AND 4TH EXTRUSION BENCHMARK

Edited by Luca Tomesani and Lorenzo Donati

The International Conference on Extrusion and Benchmark (ICEB 2011) was held in Bologna, Italy, on October 3–5, 2011.

The conference proceedings contain accepted abstract, full industrial papers and benchmark results from the 2011 edition.

ICEB is a two-in-one event, merging a conference on the "Latest Advances in Extrusion Technology and Simulation" with an industrial worldwide contest: the "FEM codes Benchmark". There is a the strong connection existing between the industrial research and the development of affordable and robust process simulation: no step forward in extrusion technology is possible without a good simulation environment. For this reason these two key aspects are put together in ICEB, which for this reason has become the biggest event in Europe in this field.

The event is divided in two sessions:

— The workshop “Latest Advances In Extrusion Technology and Simulation” focused on the latest advances in the extrusion of light alloys and related simulation issues. The workshop had contributions by industrial researchers and academics from more than 20 countries. Invited papers by leading industries and research centers described the state of the art about ongoing research in Extrusion Technology.

— The 4th Extrusion Benchmark was aimed at exploiting FEM codes capabilities and users' knowledge in the simulation of an industrial extrusion process as it was realized and monitored by the conference organizers. The comparison of the “blind” simulations by the participants with the experimental results should allow users to check if their settings are generally adequate to the problem and software house to verify the sensitivity of their solving methods.

The benchmark should not be considered as a contest. Instead, it is an opportunity to detect, explore and discuss various issues about common simulation practice, with each participant having his/her own particular interest. We hope that these results will be useful for the improvement of the existing simulation skills as well as to contribute to the process optimization research.

ALUMINIUM TWO THOUSAND CONGRESS AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON EXTRUSION AND BENCHMARK ICEB 2015

by Lorenzo Donati and Luca Tomesani (DIN University of Bologna, Italy)

This special issue of the journal Materials Today: Proceedings" contains selected peer reviewed papers presented at the 2015 edition of the 'united' congress International Conference on Extrusion and Benchmark {ICEB) 5th edition and 9th edition of Aluminium Two Thousand World Congress.

The two congresses were merged together in a single venue for the edition 2015 in order to bring together "aluminium and light alloys" specialists in a single event.

ICEB is a two-in-one event, merging a conference on the latest Advances on Extrusion Technology and Simulation with an industrial worldwide contest: the "FEM codes Benchmark".

- Aluminium Two Thousand Congress is an international conference covering all the topics of the aluminium world, and is the reference event for the operators working in the Aluminum industry.

Topics

Extrusion (process simulation, applications, innovative processes, dies & tools, material flow and friction, seam and charge welds, profiles metallurgy and the benchmark), surface treatments (anodizing, coatings, waste water treatments ), casting & die casting, forging, welding, sheet processing, market & strategies and recycling. The benchmark session exploits FEM code capabilities and users' knowledge in the simulation of two (one Scientific and one Industrial) extrusion case studies as designed and experimentally realized by conference organizers. These proceedings are a source of valuable information useful in the everyday work for scientific and industrial researchers, engineers and students.
